The outpatient clinic serves as a point of contact for patients with advanced liver diseases and liver cirrhosis as well as with secondary problems of portal hypertension. In particular, patients with the following clinical pictures are treated here:

  • Portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the portal vein)
  • Varicose veins in the esophagus (esophageal varices) or in the stomach (fundal varices) or after bleeding
  • Prevention of bleeding from varicose veins (primary or secondary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding)
  • Abdominal fluid (ascites)
  • Kidney function problems in liver disease (hepatorenal syndrome)
  • Impaired consciousness in liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy)
  • Follow-up of patients with TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt)
  • Screening and control in case of unclear hepatic space involvement(s)
  • Thrombosis of the portal vein or other intestinal veins (portal vein thrombosis, splanchnic vein thrombosis)

Special diagnostics and treatment methods necessary for liver cirrhosis are scheduled through the Liver Cirrhosis Outpatient Clinic:

  • Portal vein pressure measurement (hepatic venous pressure measurement HVPG).
  • Safe liver biopsy via the jugular vein (transjugular liver biopsy).
  • Indication of TIPS
  • Control of drug therapy (intravenous propranolol test)
  • ICG clearance (indocyanine green clearance)
  • Abdominal water puncture (paracentesis)
  • Evaluation for liver transplantation

At the same time, these patients, who represent a high-risk group for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma, receive regular tumor screening.
