Postgraduate Training

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is authorized by the Austrian Medical Association to train doctors to become specialists in internal medicine, as well as additional specialists in gastroenterology and hepatology, and for internal intensive care medicine. This task is regularly carried out by established specialists and corresponding additional specialists.

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology also participates in the training and further education of the qualified nursing and health care specialist service, whereby students from the nursing schools in Vienna and the surrounding area are primarily used for internships and trained accordingly. Similarly, students from the Academy for Dietetic Services and Nutritional Medicine Counseling Service also do internships at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and some are also mentored for their theses.

The doctors of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology are offered regular cross-departmental medical training together with the other departments of the University Clinic for Internal Medicine III (» Gastroenterological-hepatological training, clinic training, digestive research seminars). The doctors regularly take part actively and as listeners in specialist regional and international conferences. In a similar way, the members of the nursing department, as well as the department of dietetics and nutritional advice, are regularly trained in further training courses. As an example of a well-established national continuing education event with a continuous character, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has been organizing and organizing an annual » Postgraduate course in endoscopy since 1995, which is attended by active endoscopists/gastroenterologists and endoscopy assistants from all over Austria and some neighboring countries.

Furthermore, in honor of Prof. Dr. Hans Popper and to strengthen the international visibility of multidisciplinary hepatological research at the Medical University of Vienna, the "International Hans Popper Lectureship" was created, which is awarded annually to an internationally renowned research personality in the field of hepatology.
