This outpatient department serves as a contact point for patients with advanced liver diseases and liver cirrhosis as well as problems resulting from portal hypertension. In particular, patients with the following clinical pictures are treated here: 

  • Portal hypertension (portal hypertension)
  • Varicose veins in the esophagus (esophageal varices) or in the stomach (fundus varices) or after bleeding
  • Prevention of bleeding from varicose veins (primary or secondary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding)
  • Abdominal fluid (ascites)
  • Kidney function problems in liver disease (hepatorenal syndrome)
  • Loss of consciousness in liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy).
  • Follow-up care of patients with TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt)
  • Prevention and monitoring of unclear liver mass(es)
  • Thrombosis of the portal vein or other intestinal veins (portal vein thrombosis, splanchnic thrombosis).

Special diagnostics and treatment methods that are necessary for liver cirrhosis are scheduled via the liver cirrhosis outpatient clinic: 

  • Portal vein pressure measurement (hepatic vein pressure measurement HVPG)
  • Safe liver biopsy via the jugular vein (transjugular liver biopsy)
  • ndication for TIPS Control of drug therapy (intravenous propranolol testing)
  • ICG clearance (indocyanine green clearance)
  • abdominal water puncture (paracentesis)
  • Evaluation for liver transplantation

At the same time, these patients, who represent a high-risk group for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma, receive regular tumor screening
