A specially developed device is used here, which has been specially optimized for examining the bile ducts or the pancreatic duct (side view device, duodenoscope). This is advanced into the duodenum to the papilla, the confluence of the bile duct and pancreatic duct. The desired passages can then be probed via the papilla and visualized indirectly using a contrast medium under fluoroscopy.
It is then possible to remove stones, take samples, treat bottlenecks or implant tubes (stents). Direct visualization of the bile ducts is also possible (see » Cholangioscopy). Stones can be crushed or tumors can be treated. In conversation with the person treating you, you will be made aware of the possibilities and options.
