Our Division has one of only two endomicroscopy systems in Austria. This special endoscopic technology for the live assessment of superficial tissue layers in the gastrointestinal tract is now used in selected clinical pictures such as Barrett's esophagus or ulcerative colitis. In addition to purely diagnostic examinations, endomicroscopy in our department now also plays an important role in the context of therapeutic endoscopy.
It is used immediately before planned endoscopic interventions to characterize the exact surface area of suspect lesions before they are removed endoscopically as part of the same examination. In this way we have already been able to successfully resect early gastric carcinomas, early squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus and Barrett's adenocarcinomas.
